Farming With a Purpose During COVID-19

This is a difficult time for so many in our community and with massive layoffs, many people in the Capital Region are turning to food pantries more than ever to feed themselves and their families. In the month of March, the SEFCU Freight Farm responded to this growing need. Our Freight Farm, which has been in operation since early 2018 at the corporate office at 700 Patroon Creek Blvd in Albany, regularly donates about half of its produce to organizations that have weekly pickups such as the Food Pantries for the Capital District. But in March when SEFCU sent many of its staff to work from home, the produce from our Freight Farm went solely to non-profits instead of the hybrid model of feeding staff and the community that we have followed since beginning community donations.

In March alone, SEFCU donated a total of 2,654 plants to those in need in our community. This includes 373 pounds of lettuce, eight pounds of cooking greens, and 2.5 pounds of basil all donated to the community. Our basil brightened up the meals of those eating out of the Food Pantries for the Capital District along with their usual pick up of lettuce. We donated family size bags of lettuce for the South End Children's Café which is feeding 300+ families in need in the South End of Albany. Furthermore, 112 pounds of lettuce this month went to feed those in need in the City Mission of Schenectady.


We are feeding people every day and living the mission of Changing Lives Every Day! Food safety is always of the utmost importance for the Freight Farm and we are taking COVID-19 very seriously, taking all sanitary and social distancing measures to provide safe, quality food to our community partners.

 
As we continue to serve others during this great time of need the Freight Farm will be a major component of our COVID-19 response support as we will continue to donate 100% of the produce for the near future.
